📚 Our Next Book Club Journey: The Midnight Library by Matt Haig The Midnight Library invites us into the mysterious space between the life we are living and the lives we imagine we might have lived. At the center of the story is a library containing the possibilities born from every decision not made, every path not taken, and every version of ourselves that remained unlived. But is regret proof that we chose incorrectly—or is it the imagination trying to complete a story it can never fully know? As you read, I invite you to move beyond the plot and enter the book as you might enter a dream. Notice what unsettles you, what you resist, which lives attract you, and which characters or possibilities seem strangely familiar. You may wish to reflect upon: 🌙 If your psyche created a place between lives, what form would it take? A library, a forest, a temple, a train station, a studio—or something else entirely? 🌙 Who would appear there as your guide? What part of you might that figure represent? 🌙 Which of your regrets belong to your authentic self, and which were formed by expectations placed upon you? 🌙 Is the self a single fixed identity, or are we always in relationship with many possible selves? 🌙 What “unlived life” still asks for expression—not necessarily as a different career or dramatic reinvention, but as a quality, longing, or creative impulse? 🌙 Where have you confused success with aliveness? 🌙 What might become possible if you stopped asking whether you chose the perfect life and began asking how fully you are inhabiting this one? Keep a small record of recurring images, emotional reactions, dreams, questions, and passages that find you. When we gather in person, we will explore the novel through a holistic and Jungian lens: the shadow, persona, projection, regret, liminality, the unlived life, and the long movement toward becoming whole. ***This novel contains themes of depression, suicidal crisis, grief, and loss. Please read gently and care for yourself in whatever way you need. Our gathering will be a reflective literary conversation—not group therapy—and no one will be expected to disclose personal experiences. Read slowly. Enter curiously. Perhaps the library is not asking us to find a better life, but to discover a deeper relationship with the life that is already here.
