Kundalini Yoga: Practice, Presence & the Science of Change

A grounded starting point Kundalini Yoga is an old contemplative practice interpreted through many teachers and traditions. Modern research can study breathing, movement, attention, sound, rest, and structured Kundalini programs—but science has not proven every traditional energetic explanation. The two languages can sit beside one another without asking either to become the other. |
What is Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga brings several practices together: intentional breathing, repeated movement or postures, focused attention, hand gestures, sound, meditation, and deep rest. A class may feel active in one moment and very quiet in the next. The purpose is not to perform a perfect pose. It is to notice how breath, sensation, attention, and response meet—and to practice meeting them with steadiness.
In traditional yogic language, kundalini refers to latent inner energy or awareness and the possibility of awakening to a fuller experience of consciousness. Science cannot directly measure that spiritual idea. It can, however, examine many of the practice’s observable ingredients and outcomes: breathing patterns, heart-rate variability, stress and anxiety symptoms, cognition, attention, sleep, mood, and changes seen on brain imaging.
What may be happening in the body?
Breath becomes a bridge
Breathing is unusual because it happens automatically, yet we can also guide it. When breathing is made slower and more comfortable, it can influence the conversation between the lungs, heart, brain, and autonomic nervous system—the system that helps us mobilize for challenge and settle afterward. Research on slow-paced breathing commonly finds changes in heart-rate variability and baroreflex function, both related to flexible cardiovascular regulation. This does not mean every breath technique is calming: faster or forceful practices can be activating, which is why skillful pacing and options matter.[1]
Movement adds sensory information
Rhythmic movement gives the brain a steady stream of information from muscles, joints, balance systems, and the internal body. Coordinating that information with breath and attention may strengthen body awareness, balance, mobility, and the ability to recognize tension before it becomes overwhelming. The movements can be adapted, slowed, shortened, or practiced seated.
Sound and rhythm organize attention
A mantra gives the mind one repeated sound, word, or phrase to return to. Repetition can reduce the number of competing decisions in the moment, coordinate breath with rhythm, and create a stable point of attention. Small EEG and imaging studies suggest that chanting and meditation can alter patterns of brain activity, but the evidence is still developing and should not be used to promise a particular brain state.[2]
Rest completes the cycle
Relaxation is not an afterthought. After deliberate breath and movement, stillness offers time to notice the shift, reduce effort, and integrate sensation. In everyday terms, we practice activating without becoming lost in activation—and settling without collapsing or checking out.
Neuroplasticity: how practice may become a pattern
Neuroplasticity is the nervous system’s capacity to change with experience. Each time we learn a route, repeat a movement, practice a language, or redirect attention, networks in the brain are being used and refined. A single class may change how we feel for a little while. Repeated practice is what gives the brain and body more opportunities to make a response familiar.
Kundalini practice repeatedly asks us to notice, choose, and return: notice the breath; choose a pace; return to the mantra; feel effort; soften unnecessary tension; rest; begin again. In that sense, the practice is a rehearsal space. We are not forcing the brain to be calm. We are practicing the skills of attention, interoception (sensing the inner body), coordination, and recovery.

Brain-imaging research offers intriguing early findings. In small randomized Kundalini Yoga studies involving older adults or women with memory concerns, researchers reported changes in hippocampal volume or connectivity; the hippocampus plays an important role in memory and learning.[3–5] A 12-week trial also found improvements in some measures of memory and executive function, with different strengths in the yoga and memory-training groups.[6] These studies are promising, but they involve specific populations, relatively small samples, and programs longer than one weekly 45-minute class. They suggest possibility—not proof that Kundalini Yoga prevents dementia or produces a guaranteed structural change.
Meditation research more broadly has also found differences in networks involved in attention, self-referential thought, and mind-wandering. Some studies are observational, and even randomized trials do not always find structural brain changes. That mixed picture is important: neuroplasticity is real, but bold claims about instant “rewiring” run ahead of the evidence.[7–9]
What does the clinical research say?
A 2025 systematic review of randomized Kundalini Yoga trials found encouraging results across several cognitive and psychological outcomes, while also emphasizing differences among studies and the need for stronger, larger trials.[10] In a large randomized trial for generalized anxiety disorder, Kundalini Yoga performed better than stress education, but cognitive behavioral therapy remained the stronger first-line treatment and yoga did not meet the study’s standard for being as effective as CBT.[11] This is a helpful example of honest evidence: the practice may be supportive without replacing appropriate medical or mental-health care.
Why a 45-minute practice can still matter
A short class will not reproduce a 12-week clinical protocol. It can still create a meaningful weekly rhythm: arrive, breathe, move with purpose, focus the mind, and rest. Over time, students may become quicker at noticing when they are bracing, holding the breath, scattering attention, or pushing past an appropriate edge. That awareness creates room for choice—and choice is where new patterns begin.
What you will experience
· Breathwork: intentional breathing used to support attention, energy, and regulation. Options will be offered; breath is never forced.
· Kriya: a purposeful sequence of breath, movement, posture, focus, and sometimes mantra designed to create a particular experience or effect.
· Mudra: a hand gesture or body position used as a physical anchor for attention and intention.
· Mantra: a sound, word, or phrase repeated aloud or silently to gather attention and support meditation.
· Relaxation: guided or quiet rest that allows effort to release and the effects of practice to settle.
Our approach: respectful, accessible, and non-harming
We honor Kundalini Yoga as a practice with deep roots and many streams of teaching. We are not presenting ourselves as a strict or exclusively lineage-based Kundalini studio, nor do we claim one modern school as the sole owner of the tradition. Classes are offered through a contemporary, trauma-aware and non-harming lens: invitational language, practical adaptations, freedom to pause or opt out, and respect for each student’s beliefs and lived experience. Traditional elements may be shared with context and care, never as a requirement to adopt a particular spiritual identity.
This class is an educational wellness practice, not medical or mental-health treatment. Please practice within your own capacity and seek individualized guidance when needed, particularly during pregnancy or with cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, eye-pressure, balance, or mental-health concerns. Forceful breathing and prolonged breath retention are not appropriate for everyone.

Kundalini Yoga asks us to work with what is already here: breath, sensation, movement, sound, attention, and the capacity to begin again. Science gives us a growing language for understanding regulation, learning, and neuroplasticity; tradition gives us a much older language for inner awareness and transformation. On Sunday mornings, we will make room for both—without forcing either one to prove the other.
